Ministry is not a Position, but a position. When we bow at the feet of Jesus, we can wash our neighbor's feet.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Elisha was a "man of God" who didn't go looking for ministry opportunities, but simply did the next thing (after next thing) God put right in front of him.

Let me be found focused and faithful. (2 Kings 4)

Discretion adds loveliness to your character and strengthens your position. (Esther 2)

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

If we live weakened, worn down, and worn out, we're more likely to react impulsively when challenges smack us upside the head.

But being rooted in Jesus, receiving nourishment from Him, bears the fruit of self-control, so that in those moments when we need to think clearly, we'll respond well, with the long-term in mind. (Esther 1)

Thursday, September 6, 2018

As soon as we pray, He starts putting the who, what, when, why, and how in motion. He is faithful like that. (Psalm 138)

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

That moment when... you realize Jesus is the One you've been waiting for all along.

He is who He says He is.

And you take a risk... to receive all the good things He has stored up for you. (Mark 15)

Monday, September 3, 2018

Jesus warned Peter that he would deny Him. And Peter was prepared... for the elders. But not for the little girl.

We never know what tricky little thing the enemy is going to use to try and trip us up.

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give into temptation. Mark 14:37

Wednesday, August 29, 2018

Every morning he runs down the hall to my office and knows I'll be waiting for him.

He's not thinking about what happened yesterday or worrying about tomorrow. He just has a whole bunch of things he wants me to help him with.

And sometimes I say yes, but sometimes I say no (and keep saying no for a very good reason). And sometimes I have to say not now, but later.

But he's always hopeful and keeps on asking because today is a brand new day. (Mark 9)

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

I remember when God told me I could take myself out of the (emotional) middle of a difficult situation and position myself with Him and see things from His perspective. And it changed everything. (Mark 8:33)

Monday, August 27, 2018

Everything He does is wonderful. Mark 7:37

If you read that (true) statement, and are smiling and nodding your head, you're in a season to help someone who's struggling right now to believe it.

Although I've gone to church all my life, my first twenty-eight years were defined by anxiety, insecurity, and destructive behavior. Then, on January 6, 1991, I asked God to show me who He was. To reveal Himself to me. There had to be more than what I knew.

That night "He gave me a new heart, and put a new spirit in me. He took my stony, stubborn heart and gave me a tender, responsive heart (Ez. 36:26)." And I was a new creation.

(thoughts on Mark 5)
How often do we not pray because we overthink what we should say?

Jesus isn't afraid of our honest questions. He can handle every raw, unfiltered word. (Mark 4)

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Every hurting or broken person deserves to be brought to Jesus... not just the ones we feel compassionate toward, but the ones with whom our compassion has worn thin. (Mark 2)

Thursday, August 16, 2018

Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as people who don't know the meaning and purpose of life, but as those who do.  Make the best use of your time, dispute all the difficulties of these days. Don't be vague but firmly grasp what is the will of God. Ephesians 5:15-16

Tuesday, August 14, 2018

He blessed each one with an appropriate message. Genesis 49:28

"I love you."
"You're pretty."
"Your family is a gift to your city."

Those words have literally popped out of my mouth to people I didn't know (or hardly knew). The words weren't my idea, but something God wanted someone to hear.

For as many times that it's  happened, there have been more times I've missed... because I wasn't willing to be awkward.

God, help me be awkward today.

"I hereby put you in charge of the entire land of Egypt" Genesis 41:41.

In “The Will of God as a Way of Life,” Jerry Sittser debunks the fallacy that God’s will for our lives is like the cheese at the end of a maze; that it’s up to us to work and search until we figure out what it is.

Instead, he says: “Jesus wants us to devote our time and energy to all the little tasks we must do every day, not to the big decisions we occasionally have to make. The little responsibilities we do prepare us for big responsibilities later on, little actions set the stage for big ones, and faithfulness in things that appear to have only modest importance enables us to respond wisely to duties that seem (and perhaps are) very important."

Joseph was rejected, enslaved, accused, imprisoned, forgotten--and obedient for 13 years. That's how he was prepared to become the ruler of Egypt.

"Please... do me a favor "Please... do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh" (Genesis 40:14).

Sometimes it's the most unlikely people God has placed right next to you that are the answer to your prayer.

The warden had no more worries because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. Genesis 39:23

Rise to your occasion.

Tuesday, August 7, 2018

One night Joseph had a dream... Genesis 37:6

But God didn't show him everything it was going to take to fulfill the dream.

Sunday, July 29, 2018

Now I will praise the Lord!(Genesis 29:35).

Remember, through all of life's ups and downs, how God has been so faithful to you.

Saturday, July 28, 2018

"Surely the Lord was in this place, and I wasn't even aware of it" (Genesis 28:16).

Friday, July 27, 2018

"Rebekah said... listen to me and do exactly what I tell you" (Genesis 27:8).

I had a GREAT idea last night. I went over the whole scenario and planned out exactly what I was going to say. It was so good! But then, this morning, the Bible:

God doesn't need us to help Him accomplish His will. 😲🤣

Thursday, July 26, 2018

"When Isaac planted his crops that year, he harvested a hundred times more grain than he planted, for the Lord blessed him" (Genesis 26:12).

It's never about what we do, but about what God does with what we do.

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

"This is my request  ... (and) this is how I'll know" (Genesis 24:14).

In July 1994 I asked God to "give me a sign" if there was any hope to meet this guy that I was 😍... or else I needed to forget about him. The next week at church, Jeff walked over and introduced himself. I was so excited to finally meet him, but even more excited that God had answered my prayer!

Don't be afraid to ask God for exactly what you want. Be specific. If He has a different answer for you, He's big enough to work that out. But if He wants to answer your prayer in exactly the way you're praying... it can be pretty fun to experience.

"Please sell me a piece of land of land so I can give my wife a proper burial" (Genesis 23:4).

Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. We bring honor to the name of Jesus when we rely on him to help us think clearly and do what is right, even in times of great emotional stress.

"Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance" (Genesis 21:10).

It's better to wait patiently for God to fulfill his promises, than entangle ourselves with complications trying to hurry the process on our own.

Friday, July 20, 2018

"Abraham replied, 'I thought this was a godless place ...'" (Gen. 20:11).

But there is no such place. God is everywhere, and powerful to override any decision we make to accomplish his perfect will and plan. We are weak, but he is strong.

Thursday, July 19, 2018

"God had listened to Abraham's request and kept Lot safe" (Genesis 19:29).

Keep praying... and praying... and praying. God uses your prayers to move someone from where they are to where he wants them to be.

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

We may laugh... but it's never too late for God to do what he said he would do. His ways are not our ways, and all his promises are yes and amen.

(thoughts on Genesis 17)

Monday, July 16, 2018

God sees you right where you are, and is telling you what to do next. (Genesis 16)

Sunday, July 15, 2018

Remember when God started a conversation with you... planted a desire in your heart... that would not only bless you, but bless the world for his sake?

It's time to pick up the conversation where it left off. (Genesis 15)

Friday, July 13, 2018

Each stage of a child's life has blossoms and bumps, and parents are there to help them navigate and celebrate. But life-stages don't end at age 18.

Let your Father guide you through the stage of life you're in. Surround yourself with wise counselors, instead of depending on yourself to figure out what seems best.

(thoughts on Genesis 13)

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

Oh, that I would be quiet and cover someone's indiscretion rather than shame them by commenting to even one other person. (Genesis 9)

Monday, July 9, 2018

"Stepping out in faith" is not a cliche. God may say, "Not yet. Not here. Not this." But we keep stepping out and testing the waters until... kairos. (Genesis 8)

Saturday, July 7, 2018

Obedience and devotion to God can be the only preparation we need for him to suddenly choose us to solve a problem and make the world a better place. (Genesis 6)

Friday, July 6, 2018

Our lifetime is made up of a million tasks and relational details, but there's an overarching theme that's creating our legacy. (Genesis 5)

Wednesday, July 4, 2018

If we fill our days with all the good and beautiful things God has given us to enjoy, we won't have any time to go looking for what we think is missing. (Genesis 3)

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

In redemption we return to the place where God intended us: to have satisfying, purposeful, and creative work with him. (Genesis 2)

Monday, April 9, 2018

Thank God It's Monday

What if God had the same attitude at the beginning of creation week that we do at the start of our work week?

A Long Obedience

We can't "life hack" our spiritual growth. There are no shortcuts or tricks that will get us from where we are to where God wants us to be. It simply (but not simply) requires "a long obedience in the same direction."

Like a Comfortable Shoe

"God gives us more and more grace and peace as [we] grow
in [our] knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord" (2 Peter 1:2).

Over the years, our relationship with Jesus changes. At first, it's intense; everything is new. (Even old Bible stories take on new meaning!) But as time goes on, we become more comfortable with Him. Our passion doesn't lessen, and we learn new things, but there is a resting and familiar understanding.

Armed with Joy

"The joy of the Lord is my strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

God doesn't make you fight spiritual battles with weapons that are too heavy for you. He gives you weapons that fit. Today, He has armed me with Joy.

What to Do Today

"Today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse" (Deuteronomy 11:26).

Today. Just today. Morning hours... afternoon hours... evening hours...

I am giving you the choice. It's up to you.

Between. One or the other. Not both.

A blessing. Good things that sustain your life and give you strength to handle the hard things.

Or a curse. Sad, unnecessary consequences.

Best Coffee Date Ever

A great thing about Jesus is that He's a faithful friend. He doesn't leave the table when we mess up (or when someone messes us up). He sits with us and pours true love into our cup. And He keeps pouring... until we drink our fill of what is good.  And when we are satisfied, we turn and offer a cup to the person sitting at the next table.

Keep Moving Forward

Every decision we make (today) moves us closer to the very good place God has prepared for us or keeps us wandering in circles.

God's Promise to You

"After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and will place you on a firm foundation" (1 Peter 5:10).

Little by Little

If you're feeling frustrated with where you are spiritually, remember God has something he wants to teach you today. Lean in, learn, and you will grow.
